With multiple #1 singles under her belt, Jessica Sutta is becoming the first Pussycat Doll to have a lasting solo career.
If you become successful in the music industry as a group, it does not necessarily mean that if a member becomes a solo artist that they will automatically be accepted by the public. There have been a lucky few: Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Rob Thomas, etc. However, even Nicole Scherzinger, the proposed lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls, who, as a group, sold 15 million albums, had had trouble establishing herself as a solo artist. But luckily, fellow Doll, Jessica Sutta, has managed to surpass Scherzinger with her solo success. Since PCD disbanded in 2010, Sutta has earned multiple #1 singles on the Billboard Dance Chart. Her latest release, titled "Again", was released at the end of March.
Unlike other dance artists, Sutta can REALLY sing and, due to her PCD past, is a professional dancer as well. It is no surprise, since she actually has talent, that she has been able to establish herself as a solo artist. Sutta is due to release her debut album by the end of 2013.
Q&A with Jessica Sutta
What did being a Pussycat Doll teach you about the industry?
[It taught me] everything I know. It was like boot camp at first. I learned how to work really hard and still maintain balance in my life. It also taught me what or what not to do. I learned many life lessons the entire time I was a part of PCD.
You just released your third #1 single, "Again". How are you enjoying the reception? Are you performing a lot?
I've really enjoyed releasing "Again" and we've have received such a beautiful response to it. I poured my heart into this song so performing it live is always healing because I'm sharing my own life experience with the audience. There's no better feeling than connecting with your fans.
Since PCD's genre was more Pop with influences of R&B, why did you choose to be a dance artist?
I choose to be a dance artist because dance music is my first love. It's all that I listen too.
Which artists are you listening to right now?
Kaskade, Calvin Harris, Nicky Romero, Nervo Girls.
Do you have any advice for girls trying to make it in the industry?
Don't ever sell yourself short and don't ever give up.
Describe your sense of style as a performer and in your day-to-day life.
My alter ego comes out as I walk on stage. So, I would say I'm a pussycat on stage but a doll in real life.
